Infectious Diseases Institute
College of Health Sciences Makerere University
Employment Opportunities
Background:
The mission of the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) is to build capacity of health systems in Africa for the delivery of sustainable, high quality care and prevention of HIV/AIDS and related infectious diseases through training, research, and advanced clinical services. IDI has five operational areas through which it works to achieve its mission: Prevention, Care and Treatment; Training, Research and Laboratory services (provided through a partnership with the Makerere University-John Hopkins University Core Lab) and Outreach
Project Background
The Institute has received funding from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to implement a 5-year project ‘’Global Health Security Partner Engagement: Expanding Efforts and Strategies to Protect and Improve Public Health Globally’’. CDC under Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA) seeks to accelerate progress toward a world safe and secure from infectious disease threats and to promote global health security as an international security priority in three key areas:
 Preventing and reducing the likelihood of outbreaks —natural, accidental, or intentional
 Detecting threats early saves lives
 Rapid, effective response requires multi-sectoral, international coordination and
communication
Infectious Disease Institute GHSP support the MOH and its partners in developing capacity in specific thematic areas: Biosafety and Biosecurity, Resistance (AMR), Disease Outbreak Preparedness and Response, and Laboratory Systems. The activities cover national, regional and district levels. IDI is intensifying efforts to strengthen outbreak preparedness and response and Infection Prevention and Control using a One-Health approach in the refugee host districts. The key activities include identifying risks and mapping strategic entry points, settlements, and health facilities and training a district.
In Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ebola Virus Disease epidemic was declared on 1 August 2018, and now, more than 2000 lives lost and 3000 confirmed infections since the outbreak started in North Kivu, South Kivu and Ituri provinces.
Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) was detected by Uganda Ministry of Health on 11th June 2019 in Kasese district in South Western Uganda. The outbreak triggered responses from the Ministry of Health (MOH) and partners, constituting the National Task Force (NTF) for Public Health Emergencies to mitigate the risk of spread. As part of preparedness efforts, understanding gaps in the public’s knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) related to EVD will help guide the development of evidence-based risk communication and social mobilization strategies and other interventions to help prevent the spread of the virus in Uganda

Infectious Diseases Institute
College of Health Sciences Makerere University
In reference to the above national challenge, Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) at Makerere University plan to undertake an EVD geographic risk-focused KAP survey in six districts (Kasese, Kisoro, Arua, Busia, Lamwo and Kampala) to inform evidence-based, data-driven strategies for risk communication and social mobilization and other EVD interventions in both the current preparedness environment and possible future outbreak responses.
In order to achieve the above objectives, IDI seeks to recruit competent candidates as indicated below;
