Global Health Uganda (GHU) is a registered not for profit, limited liability company with the mission to promote child health by conducting and facilitating quality and relevant research in child health, neurodevelopment and interventions. GHU invites applications from suitably qualified individuals to fill the following positions for the COAST (Children’s Oxygen Administration Strategies Trial) which will be based in Masaka hospital.

1. Study coordinator (1 position full time)
Job Summary: The Study coordinator will be responsible for the day to day running of the study.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

a) Oversee the recruitment, treatment and follow up of study participants.

b) May participate in actual treatment of study participants.

c) Ensure study is conducted according to approved protocol.

d) Ensure appropriate dosing, dispensing, compliance and documentation of study medication.

e) Prepare, review and submit adverse and serious adverse event reports to the necessary regulatory bodies.

f) Assess and ensure participant safety throughout the study.

g) Supervise and ensure that research assistants are performing their respective roles.

h) Oversee and Manage onsite administrative and logistical issues pertaining to the study.

Skills and Person specifications:

• The ideal candidate should hold a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or MBChB.

• Should have a valid certificate in Good Clinical Practice and Human Participants Research Training.

• Experience in clinical research is an added advantage.

• Should have excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

2. Study nurse (3 positions full time).

Job Summary:

This person will work closely with the study medical officers in ensuring patient care for all study participants.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

• Obtaining informed consent from caregivers of eligible patients as per protocol, in accordance with GCP and HSP principles.

• Counsel and explain study procedures to the caregivers of study participants.

• Work with study medical officer to enroll eligible patients into the study, to meet the study site specific accrual targets.

• Complete study CRFs, correctly and accurately in compliance with trial procedures / SOPs and GCP standards

• Ensure study participant safety and privacy, and data integrity and confidentiality.

• Provide emergency nursing care for study participants as per protocol.

• Support the study medical officer/participate in collection of appropriate samples/specimens from study participants as per protocol and SOPs, ensuring that the samples are sent to the appropriate labs.

Skills and Person specifications:

• Diploma in Nursing (registered Nurse) or Bachelors’ Degree in Nursing and registered with the Uganda National Nurses and Midwives Council.

• At least 1 year of post-qualification professional experience in handling children

• Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and or human subject protection (HSP) training is a MUST.

• A minimum of two (2) years prior nursing experience.

• Must speak fluent Luganda.

• Good interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work well as part of a team are a must.

• Prior research experience will be a strong added advantage.

3. Data entrant (1 position full time)

Key Duties and responsibilities:

• Data entry for study data from different data sources.

• Weekly data backup for all study data.

• Database management (editing and verification).

• Prepare source data for computer entry by compiling and sorting information and establishing entry priorities.

• Reviewing data for deficiencies, resolving discrepancies by using standard procedures or returning incomplete documents to the team leader for resolution.

Person specifications:

• A degree in Information Technology or Computer science.

• Database management knowledge in the following platforms SQL and Microsoft ACCESS.

• Good data entry skills with attention to detail, confidentiality, thoroughness and a high energy level.

• Experience in research data entry in a research setting is an added advantage.

4. Laboratory technician (1 position full time)

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

• Receive, process and store all biological samples that come to the lab according the SOPs and GCLP.

• Perform microscopy on blood samples according to SOP and GCLP.

• Take part in the general lab maintenance tasks including but not limited to monitoring temperature logs, making common reagents, cleaning, and maintaining inventories.

• Do data entry for laboratory tests and samples collected. Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
• The ideal candidate should hold at least a Bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science, or equivalent. Demonstrated research experience is an added advantage.

• Excellent organizational skills.

• Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment

• Attention to detail is a must

• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

• Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary and multinational team

• Should have completed some form of human participants training in research and /or Good Clinical Practice. Must be registered with the allied health professional’s council (AHPC).
